Generally mufflers and pipes
get damaged from the inside first. The reason is because of the internal
corrosion from moisture and acids.
Follow the path
When inspecting the exhaust,
start at the hood and continue until you reach the tail pipe.
General maintenance
Check for loose or damaged
exhaust clamps and supports. Also look for holes in muffler or pipes.
Replace rusted or damaged parts.

Leaking problems
The pipes and muffler seams
are usually where a leak can occur. Also where the pipes bend or curve
harshly and low areas that gather moisture.
They get rusty
Mufflers that are after the
back axle rust earlier than those closer to the engine. It’s because
they run cooler and gather moisture when the engine is off.
