Fader |
| |
A camcorder-feature dedicated
to slowly show an image and then fades the image at the end of the film
into a black screen, indicating the end of the recording. A fading
effect can be applied to specify that time has passed from one scene to
another or to indicate that the filming places have changed. Some
camcorders allow audio-fading while others just cut the audio-recording. |

FAT 32 |
FAT 32 comes from the FAT file
allocation table system; Fat 32 supports larger volumes than FAT, and
this in turn helps for a more resourceful space allocation of data. |

Fiber Optic Cable |
| |
A technology used for sending
light beams along optical fibers; a high-speed cable used to transmit
digital signals like audio as light pulses. It can be made of glass,
plastic or hybrid fiber. Optical fibers are fundamentally unaffected to
electromagnetic interference, a great advance in audio/video cable
technology. |

File |
| |
A set of data such as a user-created document, images or a program
collected and organized to which a unique name is assigned and then
is saved in one or more locations or sent to an output source, such
as a web server or a printer. The fundamental unit of data storage
that makes possible for a computer system to differentiate data and
retrieve only the requested information. |

File name extension |
These are the letters that
appear after the period in a file name; the extensions specify the type
of data stored in the file. Different name extensions are given to the
files depending on the file’s content (text, graphical, etc.). |

Firewall |
A security system designed to
guard an organization’s network against unauthorized access. Firewalls
prevent a network’s group of computers from exchanging data directly
with outside users; all communication between a firewall protected
network and other computers is redirected to a Proxy server which is
outside the network; the Proxy server is in charge of allowing or
denying direct access to the network. |

Flying Erase Head |
A helpful feature found in VCRs;
this feature uses a second video-head inside the VCR for dubbing or
editing from a VCR connected to another VCR. This helps reduce obvious
changes of editing, video and sound, especially at the editing start and
ending points. |

FM |
Frequency modulated. |
FM sensitivity |
It specifies a receiver’s
aptitude to pick up FM radio signals. A lower sensitivity indicates a
better reception component. |

Folders |
Folders are of practical use
when the amount of data saved is large; folders permit organizing data
by allowing other files and folders to be saved within folders; a folder
is a directory for categorizing documents and programs on a hard drive
or other storage format. |

Fragmentation |
Happens to accessed files which
are broken up into several parts according to the function they had when
it was a whole file; this scattering of the files parts takes place over
several areas of the hard disk. The fragmentation comes by itself when
older files are replaced by new files; then the hard drive slows down
and it takes more time for it to retrieve requested data and the
performance of the hard drive is a bit sluggish. |

Frame |
An individual still image of a
film; in video, a frame encloses the image scanning lines. Frame rate is
usually measured in seconds; it partially depends on the amount of
frames the film provides per second that the quality of the film can
better or worse. The Progressive-scanning format uses twice the amount
of frames than the interlaced scan format. |
Frequency |
The measuring system used for
defining a cycle of a periodic event; frequency is generally measured in
Hertz (Hz) and one Hz is equivalent to one cycle. In audio, common human
audible frequencies range from 20(Hz) to 20,000(Hz) cycles per second;
in video, frequencies are used to delineate image resolution. |
Front Inputs |
Video or audio input jacks
placed in the front of components to facilitate the connection of other
components; this is particularly practical when it has to be a quick
connection, without going behind the components to pull or reconnect any
wires. The front inputs can be of different types including RCA, S-video
or fiber optic wiring. |

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) |
It belongs to the family of
essential TCP/IP internet protocols; FTP is used to transfer files
between computers online. All computers involved in a FTP file
transferring must communicate using the same protocol and the computer
that shares a file is always called the FTP server while the accessing
computers for the file are called clients. |
