Acronym for Local Area
Network; a communications group of computers or other devices separated
over a small and limited area and joined by a link that facilitates all
machines to interact with other machines in the network. Devices
connected to a LAN are called nodes.

Letterbox.
A picture or image that is the
consequence from displaying images of widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio on
a screen of standard aspect ratio (4:3); the image is seen between black
bars above and below the image. Every part of the screen has resolution
lines; therefore the black bars take part of the linear resolution,
leaving fewer lines to the actual seen image.

Liquid Crystal Display.
A screen that is made of two
polarizing transparent panels and a liquid crystal sheet of polar
molecular structure placed in between the panels. When voltage is
applied to the display, the molecules align, forming a crystalline array
that polarizes light as it passes thru the crystals; a very complex
display technology.
Luminance.
A measure of the quantity of
light given out by a certain electrical source; the seen brightness of a
color as opposed to the color’s saturation or hue.
