When taking your pulse, count
the first beat as zero and then start counting. Put your middle and
index fingers on either side of your neck, under your jaw and take it.
Remember not to press too hard to avoid cutting off at the neck or
wrist.
Machines that take pulse
Many cardiovascular machines,
like treadmills and stair climbers can directly take your pulse from
your heart rate monitor.
Heart rate monitor
A heart rate monitor will get
a more precise reading of your pulse. Place it around your chest, and it
will transfer the readings to a wristwatch that acts as a receiver.

Target heart rate
It’s crucial for you to know
your target heart rate because if you’re under it, your not doing much
of a workout. To determine your maximum heart rate, subtract your age
from 220 and multiply it by 0.65. The result is the best amount of heart
beats per minute to maximize how much fat you burn.
How to measure heart rates
Heart rates are measured in
beats per minute (bpm). Our ambient heart rate is when you are sitting
and relaxed, it’s around 70 bpm for most people. In general, the lower
it is the better.
